The Saudi Association of Community Colleges has been established by virtue of King Saud University Council in its 8th session held on 01/05/1429 H. after examining a memorandum on founding the association forwarded to the Council by Community College in Riyadh, and by virtue of the Academic Council decree issued in its 20th session held on 03/07/1429 that stipulated the formation of an ad hoc constituent committee for SACC. The constituent committee was entrusted with following up the procedures taken to establish the association. Mission Statement Following the example of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) in the USA, the country of origin of this type of higher education and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) in Canada, which was the second country to follow suit, SACC foundation is justified by the services it renders to community colleges and the role it plays in the achievement of the goals pursued by the University in particular and the Saudi society in general. These two associations achieved many goals that have been instrumental in developing community colleges in both countries. Here is a brief summary on both associations. American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Founded in 1920, AACC has 1200 member community colleges. The average number of community colleges under a single association in every state ranges from 15 to 35. California association of community colleges has 35 member colleges, while Virginia and Maryland associations have 28 and 16 community colleges respectively. There are American regional associations of community colleges that bring under their umbrella a number of such associations. Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) Founded in 1972, the association of Canadian community colleges (ACCC) has more than 100 member colleges. The ACCC hierarchy and goals are much the same as those pursued by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The achievements and contributions of both associations are unmistakable. They have played a significant role in developing and updating the programs run by community colleges, which resulted in preparing qualified graduates in the transfer, associate degree and training programs as well as promoting modern technology in society. This had a positive impact on the social and economic development in both countries. As for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where the experience of community colleges is still in its infancy, there should be an association that can secure the exchange of experience among local community colleges on the one hand and with the international colleges and associations on the other hand. This will lead to the development and variation of programs and curricula in a way that achieves the goals set for community colleges in the Kingdom. The activities of the proposed association will be subject to the regulations governing the foundation of associations in Saudi universities. This association is expected to realize its goals due to the variety of the opportunities available, the strong conviction held by its members of the mission and goals of the association, and the social and economic impact it will have on the whole society.
